이 논문은 사회과 교과서의 삽화 분석을 통해 사회적으로 구조화되고 문화적으로 재생산되는 장애에 관한 지배적인 이데올로기가 무엇인지 밝히고, 사회문화 교사들의 교수내용지식(Pedagogical content knowledge)에 요구되는 소수자 문화에 대한 이해를 돕는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이 연구는 교과서가 전달하는 장애에 관한 지식이 무엇인지 알아보기 위해, 사회과 교과서에 나타난 장애인관을 분석한다. 2015 개정 초·중·고등학교 사회과 교과서 23권을 대상으로 4가지 차원의 장애인관 분석틀을 이용하여 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 2007년에 시행된 특수교육법의 철학적 근간이 되는 장애가 사회문화적으로 구성된다는 관점이 교육과정에서도 발견되고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 우리 사회의 구성원인 다양한 장애의 가치와 문화를 가진 사람들의 모습이 현실적으로 제시되지 않고 있다. 셋째, 장애의 문제를 개인이 아닌 사회에서 찾고 있다는 점에서 매우 의미있다고 할 수 있다. 전체적으로 2015 개정 사회과 교과서 삽화 분석은 장애에 관한 긍정적인 인식을 전달하고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나, 여전히 장애는 불쌍하고(Ⅰ차원), 의존적이고(Ⅱ차원), 극복해야 하는 것(Ⅲ차원)으로 보고 있다는 사실을 보여준다. 따라서, 소외된 집단인 장애인의 문화나 지식을 교육과정에 반영시키고 궁극적인 사회통합을 달성하기 위해서 사회과 교과서가 선택한 지식과 선택되지 못한 지식에 관해 탐구가 요구된다.
Abstract
The objective of this study was to set the direction for education on understanding disabilities through the school curriculum by analyzing disability-related illustrations provided in social studies textbooks. This study analyzed 4 dimensions of the views on persons with disabilities in 23 elementary, middle, and high school social studies textbooks of the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. First, a physical disability was the most common type of disability, whereas there were no autism spectrum disorder or learning disabilities. Second, many of the disability-related topics were on respect for human rights. Social studies textbooks acknowledge individual differences and cover contents on respect for human rights. Third, the 4th dimension of views on persons with disabilities was found most in the textbooks. However, there were many cases in which the textbooks showed the 1st dimension, viewing disabilities as an individual problem and describing the disabled as dependent people receiving medical treatment and help from others. Therefore, the curriculum must be revised so that elementary, middle, and high school social studies textbooks provide all kinds of knowledge about disabilities, with improved contents that present actual life of people with disabilities and prevent stereotypes and prejudices against disabilities. Furthermore, the writers and researchers of social studies textbooks must receive training about disabilities to help them select and improve disability-related contents, while also inviting participation of actual people with disabilities and the students as well. In addition, research must be conducted to promote desirable understanding and improve the perception on disabilities using social studies textbooks in school settings.
