Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine whether the growth mindset moderated the effect of socially-prescribed perfectionism on academic procrastination through self-handicapping. Two-hundred thirty-one female college students participated in this study. Participants were asked to assess their socially-prescribed perfectionism, self-handicapping, growth mindset, and academic procrastination through self-reporting methods. The results showed that the negative effects of socially-prescribed perfectionism on academic procrastination through self-handicapping differed by the level of the students' growth mindset. Especially, as the growth mindset increased, the negative effects of socially-prescribed perfectionism shrank, and disappeared when the growth mindset reached above a certain level. These results mean that a growth mindset played an important role in reducing academic procrastination caused by socially-prescribed perfectionism and self-handicapping. Educational intervention for academic procrastination based on the growth mindset was discussed.
