우리 경제에서 민간소비의 비중이 GDP의 절반 이상을 차지함에 따라 경기판단을 위한 민간소비의 역할이 중요해지고 있다. 그런데 민간소비 상황은 신용카드 사용정보를 활용할 경우 신속한 파악이 가능하다. 특히 신용카드는 업종별⋅지역별 편제가 가능하므로 서비스업을 중심으로 한 업종별 동향과 함께 지역별 소비상황을 종합적으로 살펴볼 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 그러나 지금까지 양자 간 관계에 대한 체계적인 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 본고에서는 소비 대리변수로서의 신용카드 사용액의 유효성에 대해 실증분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 분석결과 신용카드 사용액 통계는 소매판매와 상관계수가 높게 나타난 데다 민간소비와의 시차상관계수도 당기에서 가장 높게 나타나 경기판단을 위한 보조지표로도 활용될 수 있을 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 신용카드 사용통계를 활용해 지역별 소비특성에 관해 분석해 보고 향후 지자체의 경제정책 등 정책적 활용방안 등에 대해 모색해 보았다. 이처럼 신용카드 통계가 국내 및 지역 경기를 판단하는 데 유용한 정보를 줄 뿐 아니라 지역별 소비특성을 잘 반영하는 것으로 나타난 만큼 향후 합성지수 개발, 정부 정책변화에 따른 신용카드 통계의 안정성 등에 대한 추가적인 연구가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.
Abstract
This paper tries to investigate the relations between private expenditures and the amount of credit card usage. We conducted an empirical analysis of the validity of the credit card usage as a proxy for private consumption, and then found that the amount of credit card usage has high correlation with private consumption. Also, we analyzed the regional consumption characteristics from the statistics of credit card usage. The credit card information can be utilized so as to establish regional economic policies when bilateral data of sales and purchase in a region are available in the future.
