Abstract

The decade of 1960 was a period of social changes due to economic growth, and increased consumers’ problems in Japan. It was against this social background that the Japanese Consumers’ Cooperative (co-op) developed its own model of organization and operation. In 1992, the International Co-operative Alliance congress in Tokyo made it famous as a global model. Meanwhile, South Korea made some attempts to build a co-op within the same lines. However, these attempts focused mainly on the development of the Japanese co-op in the decades of 1970~1980, overlooking many of the social crisis or issues it was currently facing.In this paper, we first situate the Japanese co-op within the theory of sectors. Second, we present the process of its constitution in the post-war, as well as its characteristic “gHan”h activity, and discuss the social situation of its main body, the housewife. Third, we describe the implementation status of welfare business related to the ongoing population aging combined with birthrate decline. We then present the development of workers collective, another feature of Japanese Co-op. In tracing the historical evolution of Japanese co-op, we hope to present an orientation for future progresses of Korean co-op.
