Abstract
Using the 2019 living time survey data. this paper analyzes the relationship between travel time and time poverty in south Korea by regions. The main results are followings. First, there are regional differences in the composition of travel time. The daily commuting time is about 1 hour and 30 minutes in the metropolitan area, while it is only about 1 hour in the non-metropolitan area. Care travel time is short in the metropolitan area and relatively long in rural areas. Second, regional differences in time composition frame the relationship between travel time and time poverty in different ways. In the metropolitan area, time poverty has a high correlation between paid and unpaid work hours and commuting time, whereas in the non-metropolitan area, it is more related to caregiver travel time than commuting time. Third, the relationship between travel time and time poverty tends to deepen as the subject of analysis is narrowed down to entire married people, households with children, and dual-income households with children. Reducing commuting time in the metropolitan area and travel time for care in non-metropolitan areas is a way to solve time poverty in South Korea.
