Abstract

Based on the work-life experiences of single workers living alone, this study aims to provide a clue as to what drives the production and reproduction mechanism to operate and continue in an individualised society. In a modern capitalist society, production-reproduction activities have been centred around family. However, in a post-modern capitalist society where individualisation intensified, it is difficult for a family to be the essential motivation for production-reproduction activities. Therefore, through in-depth interviews with 21 unmarried workers living alone, this study aims to examine in detail the contexts in which single household workers continue to work in the labour market and what activities are composed of their non-work time. This research found that the production and reproduction activities of the modern capitalist society, which families had driven, are being reorganised into activities to produce and reproduce 'the self' in the late modern capitalist society. For solo workers, labour is recognised as an activity to prove and actualise their self-identities beyond the activity of producing goods or services to support the livelihood of families. The meaning of reproduction is also changing to regenerating self-identities of individual workers through self-development and self-healing, rather than caring for the next generation or restoring physical labour power. This study conceptualised the production-reproduction mechanism of an individualised post-modern capitalist society as 'self-production' and 'self-reproduction' and briefly suggested how future social policies could respond to these changes.
