Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the path structure of the factors influencing happiness and statistically examine similarities and differences in the path between South Koreans and North Korean defectors. A method of multi-group path analysis was applied focusing on the theoretical path structure that an individual's objective life conditions affect subjective happiness through the mediation of subjective perceptions of society. Analytical results shows that indirect effect of objective life condition variables on happiness through subjective perception of society, especially social class perception, were found to be significant in both groups. The CRDs(Critical Ratios for Differences) was significant only for the path in which education level influenced social class perception. This was found to be significant in the South Korean group, but not in the North Korean defector group. Based on the findings of this study, the policy direction and practical implications that can promote the happiness of the entire and each group were derived. Focused on the difference, additional policies for North Korean defectors who are in an absolutely poor position in South Korean society are needed. In particular, it is necessary to provide customized re-education that can help adapt to the social system and raise social class awareness in South Korean society.
