Abstract

What is the relationship between Education and Politics? The main concern of this study is not the argument that education and politics should or should not be separated. Rather, it is concerned with the fact that the relationship between education and politics is a multifaceted and complex issue that is closely intertwined with the relationship between the individual and society and the idea of school. This leads to an alternative approach that highlights the diverse aspects and conditions forming the relationship between education and politics. In this light, it would be interesting to compare Dewey’s and Arendt’s perspectives on the relationship between education and politics. Both are preeminent political thinkers who share common ground for democracy and against modern individuals. However, the relationship between education and politics remains controversial. Dewey argued for “continuity” in the relationship between education and politics, whereas Arendt argued for a “distinction” between the two. This study shows that Dewey's and Arendt's opposing positions on education and politics stem from their opposing positions on liberal education, which is the origin of the idea of schools. By interpreting liberal education as “education for free class,” Dewey argued for the continuity of education and politics in a way that eliminated the class distinction between free and non-free people. On the other hand, Arendt interpreted liberal education as freedom from the necessity and utility of the private sphere and argued for a separation between education and politics in a manner that maintained the distinction between the private and public spheres.
