Abstract

This study aims to reveal the deficiencies of modern education and explore how the Eastern tradition of Xīn Xué can address these issues. I begin by analyzing the current state of modern education, which focuses primarily on cognitive knowledge, affective attitudes, and psychomotor skills, but neglects the cultivation of the heart and mind. In contrast, Neo-Confucianism, through Xīn Xué, emphasizes the correction of human nature as the essence of self-cultivation. T’oegye and Yulgok, prominent figures in this tradition, developed the Chí Jìng and Jiăo Qì Zhì methods, respectively, to establish the Xīn Xué paradigm. Although Neo-Confucianism and modern education operate in distinctly different dimensions, their integration is feasible and can be likened to the harmonious coexistence of Yin and Yang. Such integration promises a comprehensive educational framework that addresses the shortcomings of modern education by incorporating the insights of Xīn Xué.
