영화 <빅 피쉬>에 나타난 장자의 사상과 우언적 수사법에 관한 연구

영화 <빅 피쉬>의 전반적인 내러티브의 흐름은 애드워드의 허구 넘치는 이야기들로 진행된다. 이렇게 상상의 나래를 펼치게 만드는 내러티브의 전개는『장자』가 우리에게 고정관념의 탈피를 위해 전달하고자 했던 언어의 한계를 넘어선 빗대어 말하는 표현법과 매우 닮아 있다. 특히 <빅 피쉬>에 나타난 갖가지 사물들에 빗대어 표현한 기묘한 세계와 생동감 넘치는 새로운 인물들의 표현은『장자』에 드러난 붕새와 인물의 묘사법과 맥락을 같이 한다. 또한 영화의 곳곳의 내러티브에서 장자의 사상이 드러나 있었다. 에드워드가 추구했던 넓은 세상으로의 진출을 비롯하여 평범하지 않는 외모를 지닌 인물들에게 적절한 자리를 소개시켜주는 행위 속에서 장자의 ‘소요하며 노닌다’는 의미를 지는 ‘소요유’와 생명을 가꾸는 근본으로 보는 ‘양생주’의 맥락을 읽어낼 수 있으며 모든 생명체가 지닌 죽음이라는 부분에 있어서도 슬픔대신 자연의 섭리를 의미로 내세운 부분에서도 그 맥락을 같이 하고 있었다. 시대를 초월하여 동양사상이 서양영화에 드러난 배경을 유추해 보건데 이는 영화감독이 전달하고자 했던 메시지와 장자가 어렵고 난해한 철학의 오묘한 진리를 전달하고자 했던 철학가의 정의가 우언적 수사법의 선택을 통해 그 뜻을 독자와 관객에게 효과적으로 전달하고자 했음으로 해석할 수 있다. 또한 시대를 초월하여 판타지 영화인 <빅 피쉬> 속에서 『장자』의 사상을 엿볼 수 있는 이유로 두 영화의 시대적 배경의 공통점에서도 찾아 볼 수 있다. 장자가 살던 시대는 전국시대로 전쟁이 빈번하여 한치 앞도 내다볼 수 없는 혼란한 삶을 살아야만 하는 시기였으며 우리가 살고 있는 시대도 치열한 경쟁과 급변하는 변화 속에 겪는 각박한 현실을 지내야 한다. 이러한 삶의 고통이라는 공통적인 요소는 문학과 영화 속에서 각각 판타지적인 요소를 지닌 허구와 과장의 우언적 표현법으로 그 의미를 전달하고 있다.
Abstract
Movie <Big Fish> flow of the narrative progression of the story is full of fiction of Edward. Deployment of these imaginative narrative, Zhuangzi’s representation is very similar. In particular, <Big Fish> show us the same how to describe aimed to express all kinds of weird things, the new world and a vibrant expression of the people. Also narrative reveals Zhuangzi’s thought in many places. Therefore, analysis of the movie was conducted with the view of, Zhuangzi’s base idea being implemented with the director Tim Burton’s movies. Also the relationship and the meaning analysis of ‘Xiao-yao-you’, ‘and ‘Yang-sheng-zhu’. Go across the time and culture background, also given the difference of east and west, eastern philosopher Zhuangzi’s idea is revealed in movies of western world might sound absurd but, this study was conducted due to strong connection with the story of a philosopher’s pursuit of truth and existence of a director’s understanding through narration and storytelling style of his movies. Analogical inference is that ideology of Zhuangzi and theatrical description of Tim Burton portrays ‘the ultimate truth’ and the value of it is beyond the time difference and it makes us to realize meaning of the ‘truth’ is universal. Also <Big fish> and Zhuangzi’s thought have similar historical background. The era was a time of war. And another one is the era of competition such as the war. So we can find common ground in two places. Thus the pain of life is commonly expressed as the fantasy genre with exaggeration and metaphor.
