Abstract
Place images are restructured with new meaning, reflecting technological influences and globalization beyond geographical constrains. During the past two decades, a plethora of social media platforms have been developed and are readily available to every person and organization for publishing content, which provide new opportunities to promote a place. However, there is a paucity of research about the role of social media content in relation to developing place images in a contemporary city. The method used was multiple regression analysis for 1,284 posts form the Union Square Partnership(USP) Instagram profile from June 18, 2013 to December 31, 2015. Regression analysis was used to identify the relationship between the dependent variables(Likes and Comments), and the 14 independent variables. ‘Characteristic’, ‘Nearby’ and ‘Other’, showed positive impacts and statistically explained variations in Likes. And none of the typology influenced or had impacts on the comments. The research showed that a unit increase in character, nearby and others typologies, will increase likes on the Instagram account of Union Square Partnership(USP), but it was not statistically meaningful in the relationship with Comments in any typology.
