Abstract
This study explored strengths and limits of the intrinsic processing deficit approach for diagnosis and identification of mathematics learning disabilities. According to previous research, among cognitive processing variables of students with academic problems with math, working memory explained the differences in math achievements more than other cognitive variables did. However, more systematic research seems to be needed with regard to the roles of speed of processing and phonological awareness. Regarding basic math learning skills, students with math learning disabilities or at risks performed consistently lower with number sense and simple arithmetic fluency than their peers, and this trend was not changed by their ages and grade levels. Although the intrinsic processing deficit approach has good prospects providing essential information for not only for diagnosis and identification of math learning disabilities but also development of effective intervention programs, more intensive research was necessary in several parts.
