Abstract
The importance of family support services, as a tool to improve the development of young children with disabilities as well as the quality of parent's lives, is growing in the field of early childhood special education. The collaboration between parents of young children with disabilities and special education teachers should be an integral part of family support services. This study, as a qualitative case study, aimed to identify family-related problems that a mother of young child with developmental delay was experiencing by using in-depth interviews with semi-structured questionnaires. Based on the identified family-related problems, this study proposes a collaborative education program involving the mother and the young child's special education classroom teacher. Then, this study implemented the collaboration program and used participant observation and interviews in order to analyze the effects of this program on the family-related problems identified above. The results showed that the quality of the parent's life enhanced as a result of the collaboration program. Specifically, there was improvement not only in terms of life skills and behavioral development related to the education of the young child, but also in terms of psychological adaptation, community participation, and partnership between the mother and the special education teacher. The results of this study can be used as basic resources in developing and implementing collaborative education programs for early childhood special education teachers and parents of young children with developmental disabilities.
