Abstract
This study compared the properties of joint attention and behavioral requests with 11 autistic and 11 normal children, who were matched in mental ages. Joint attention and behavioral requests were observed with Early Social Communication Scale. In this scale, joint attention and behavioral requests were assessed in two categories-initiation and responding. The findings were as follows. First, autistic children performed more poorly than normal children both in initiating and responding to joint attention. They showed little eye contact, alternation, pointing and showing to initiate joint attention. Similarly, they also showed little point following and gaze following in responding to other's initiation of joint attention. Second, autistic children performed more poorly than normal children in initiating behavioral requests, but performed well in responding to others' behavioral requests. They employed reaching most to initiate behavioral requests. However, they didn't showed giving and giving with eye contact. These results suggest that autistic children, compared with normal children, have difficulty in initiating and responding to joint attention as well as in initiating behavioral request, but not in responding to behavioral requests.
