Abstract
This study explores the potential of ‘Town MICE’ as a differentiated urban branding strategy for small and medium-sized cities, moving beyond the conventional large-scale, industry-driven MICE approaches predominant in metropolitan areas. Focusing on four case studies—Deoksuri in Seogwipo, Jemicheon in Gongju, Gaehang-ro in Incheon, and Wolmyeong-dong in Gunsan—the research compares the planning and operational structures, content strategies, and spatial utilization methods of Town MICE initiatives. Qualitative research was conducted through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders involved in each project. The findings reveal that Town MICE transforms everyday local spaces into unique venues and reconfigures urban identity through the active participation of diverse community actors, thereby demonstrating the potential for both economic and social sustainability in urban branding. Furthermore, by applying new MICE concepts such as Meaningful Market, Impact-driven Incentive, Community Commerce, and Experience-based Enterprise, these cases illustrate how Town MICE initiatives foster emotional connections and create tangible value that extends beyond one-off events. This study positions Town MICE as a practical strategy that integrates socio-cultural assets with economic value in urban branding, and highlights the need for institutional support, design-based operations, and long-term impact assessment in future policy and practice.
