Abstract
This study is designed to investigate how the historical event Gwangju Uprising represents in the cultural arts, and how the gender images represent in the theatre texts of Gwangju Uprising. Accordingly, this study analyzed the female and male characters and their positions and gender images in the text from the viewpoints of feminism. Further concretely, the critical mind and purview of this study are as follows. First, how much suppression was given in constructing the gender roles of the women in the texts of Gwangju Uprising theatre? Second, how the images of the women were shown? Third, why a specific woman image was created in the texts? Fourth, what the image stood for or its symbolization meant? In conclusion, the texts of Gwangju Uprising theatre distorted the lives and experiences of the women. The women are only revived as the minor roles of the Gwangju uprising and the assistant roles of the men. Moreover, the women are passive as just following the decision of the men without expressing their own thoughts due to the authority of the men. Like this, the representation of the women as the minor characters is obviously contradictory to the truth of the Gwangju Uprising. Therefore, it is necessary to newly recognize the lives and experiences of the women appearing in the texts of Gwangju Uprising theatre. That is, the woman characters in the theatre texts should be represented as the subjective existence sharing the awareness with the men, instead of being shown as the minor characters in the objective positions.
