(Korean Augmentation to the United States Army)
Abstract
The research aims to analyze how male conscription as a main factor of hegemonic masculinities functions in the South Korean society through a case study of the masculinity of KATUSA (Korean Augmentation to the United States Army). Hegemonic masculinity leads masculinities to a certain direction and enforce its power and privilege by discriminating and marginalizing different masculinities. Under the influence of hegemonic masculinity, KATUSA soldiers comprised by future elites are shamed of their choice to join to KATUSA known for easier soldiering works and life styles and are not confident of their identities as a good Korean soldier. To compensate for the shame and nonconfidence, they try to keep strict hierarchies and tough morales among soldiers and implant military culture of ordinary Korean armies into theirs. Also, their anti-Americanism acquired through discriminatory experience in the US army, makes KATUSA cultivate different masculinities from those of American soldiers. KATUSAs do not challenge male culture that ridicules KATUSA soldiers with the categorization of conscripts by the degree of sacrifice to the state. It informs us that how hegemonic masculinity sustains and reproduces its privilege and power when conscription has crucial power in determining eligibilities of good citizenship and good men.
