ADHD 자녀를 둔 부모의 적응과정에 관한 질적 연구

Qualitative Study on Parents’ Experiences of Raising a Child with ADHD

초록

본 연구는 ADHD 자녀를 양육하는 부모들의 경험과 적응과정을 어머니, 아버지 그리고 치료사의 관점에서 세 가지의 연구주제로 하여 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 연구 참여자는 어머니 9명, 아버지 8명, 그리고 7명의 치료사이다. 연구방법은 질적 연구로서 어머니의 적응과정은 어떠한지에 관한 연구주제 1과 아버지의 적응과정에 관한 연구주제 2에서는 반구조화된 질문지로 심층면접을 통하여 자료수집을 하였다. 자료분석 방법으로 부모들의 다양한 경험들을 범주에 대한 빈도수를 표기해서 다수뿐만 아니라 소수의 사례도 나타낼 수 있는 보다 엄밀한 절차를 지닌 합의에 의한 질적 연구법(CQR)으로 영역들과 범주들을 도출하였다. 연구주제 1에서는 11개의 영역들과 48개의 범주들이 도출되었으며, 연구주제 2에서는 7개의 영역과 25개의 범주들이 결과로 나왔다. 치료사의 관점으로 연구한 연구주제 3에서는 치료사들과 포커스그룹 인터뷰 방식으로 4개의 범주와 11개의 하위범주가 결과로 제시되어 ADHD 자녀를 둔 부모들을 위한 적절한 개입과 치료방법들을 이끌어내었다. 전체적인 연구결과로 ADHD 자녀를 둔 부모들은 일련의 단계별로 진행되는 ‘인식’, ‘위기’, ‘직면’, ‘수용’, 그리고 ‘대처’의 5단계의 적응과정을 거치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이를 통해 ADHD 아동에 대한 부모의 조기 진단과 개입이 중요하며 ADHD 진단에 직면하고 수용하면서 적절한 중재와 부모교육이 ADHD 자녀와 부모의 삶을 긍정적인 방향으로 이끌 수 있다는 점을 시사하고 있다. 마지막으로 이를 근거로 추후 연구를 위한 제언을 하였다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to comprehend fully the parents’ experiences of raising a child with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder by finding out what their experiences were and examining their adaptive processes. The research questions were three-fold: 1. “What is the mother's adaptive process of raising a child with ADHD?”, 2. “What is the father’s adaptive process of raising a child with ADHD?” and 3. “How do clinicians and therapists perceive the parents’ adaptive process of raising a child with ADHD?” In studies 1 and 2, in-depth interviews from the parents were transcribed and analyzed by consensual qualitative research (CQR) method. In study 3, focus group interviews from ADHD clinicians and therapists were conducted to assess results of the study in 1 and 2 and foster proper intervention and treatment plans for ADHD children and their parents. Analysis of the results from study1, 2 and 3 yielded an adaptive process of parents raising a child with ADHD. The adaptive process was a series of step-by-step stages: ‘Perceiving’ stage, ‘Critical’ stage, ‘Confronting’ stage, ‘Accepting’ stage and ‘Coping’ stage.
