Abstract

The purpose of this study is to qualitatively analyze the psychological adapting process of the mother with ADHD children. 10 mothers with ADHD children were participated in this study. The participants were interviewed according to the non-structured questionnaire and recorded. The whole contents interviewed were specifically described and analyzed through the coding process. As a result of this study, the psychological adapting process of the mother with ADHD children was composed of five stages; denial, anger, compromising, depression, and reception. First, in the denial stage, disorder was viewed as a characteristic of the child, the particular surrounding, the problem of growth process, or the intentional action of the child and was appeared as suspiciousness in first diagnosis. Second, the anger stage was expressed as the anger of teachers and families, the anger of herself, and the anger of her child with ADHD. Third, the compromising stage was appeared as her activity for adaption and the expectation for improving soon. Fourth, the depression was caused as the avoidance of her interrelation, the difficulties of bringing up her child with ADHD, and her hopelessness. Fifth, the reception stage was appeared to cognize the necessity of continuous remedy, to use the support system positively, and to adjust her expectation level. Sixth, those psychological adapting processes were not unidirectional, but showed to be the spiral pattern among anger, compromising, depression, and reception excepting the first denial stage. Therefore it is necessary to approach according to the psychological adapting process of the mother with ADHD children for intervening the children with ADHD effectively and positively.
