Abstract
This study examined media contents modality effects of news used in the Office of the President. To test its effects, this study categorized media contents modalities used in the Office of the President as (a) text (text-only) news, (b) card (text+visual) news, (c) Instagram photo (visual+text) news, and (d) YouTube video (audio+visual; nontext) news. The experiment was conducted on 208 Korean adults to test (a) whether exposure to four types of media contents modalities could result in differently on users’ memories, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior intentions toward contents modality and (b) whether these effects could be moderated by style of processing (i.e., visualizer, verbalizer). Results showed that YouTube video news resulted in high recognition memory toward contents modality compared to Instagram photo news. Card news resulted in high entertainment belief and attitudes toward contents modality than text news. The tendency that card news resulting in high beliefs (i.e., information, entertainment), attitudes, and behavior intentions toward contents modality than text news was found only for visualizers, but not among verbalizers. Therefore, we found media contents modality had different effects on users.
