Abstract

Plasmonic heating exploits the strong, localized photothermal conversion enabled by nanostructures, however conventional Au‐based systems sufferfrom rapidly diminishing absorption beyond wavelengths longer than 450 nm due to the weakening of d–sp electron transitions. Here, we introducea grating platform using amorphous‐silicon (a-Si) to overcome this spectral limitation by achieving light‐to‐heat conversion efficiencies exceeding 60% across the entire 300–800 nm range. Unlike metals, a-Si combines a high absorption coefficient with superior thermal stability, for sustained photothermal performance over an extended bandwidth. By elaborately engineering both the fundamental and higher‐order resonant modes on the grating, we dramatically broaden the heating spectrum compared to flat‐film counterparts. Finite‐difference simulations of the transient temperature ata point within an aqueous environment showed that the a-Si grating not only heated more rapidly but also induced higher peak temperatures than anequivalent Au film. This work can expand plasmonic heating materials from simple metals to common semiconductors and unlock new opportunities for long‐wavelength photothermal applications in biomedical sensing, localized microfluidic actuation, and cost‐effective photothermal therapy.
