Abstract
The purpose of this article is to investigate the causes of gender blindness in neoclassical economics among a group of economists with varying levels of gender awareness. As a case study, the economics and lives of Alfred Marshall, the father of neoclassical economics, and his wife, Mary Paley Marshall, are analyzed. Through the gender relation and real life of the couple, the article explores the gender blindness of Marshallian and neoclassical economics. First, the gender blindness of neoclassical economics and the gender awareness of Alfred Marshall and Arthur Cecil Pigou are examined. Next, we examine the lives and studies of the Marshall couple. Finally, the limitations of Mary Paley Marshall are examined by comparing her life and work with those of Harriet Taylor Mill, Joan Robinson, and Beatrice Webb. Through this, Mary Paley Marshall's life and studies are reevaluated from the perspective of feminism.
