조현병 자녀 어머니의 모성경험: 내면화된 낙인과 감정을 중심으로

본 논문은 조현병 자녀를 둔 어머니 15명과의 심층면접을 바탕으로 어머니의 모성 경험을 내면화된 낙인과 감정을 중심으로 분석한다. 연구 결과, 조현병 자녀를 둔 어머니는 자녀의 조현병 발병에 대해 죄책감을 느꼈으며, 이러한 죄책감은 어머니의 양육태도와 돌봄 방식, 그리고 자신이 부모에게 받았던 돌봄까지 다시 점검하는 기제를 작동시키는 원천이 되었다. 또한 어머니는 죄책감과 함께 수치심이라는 감정을 크게 느꼈다. 수치심은 조현병이 “정신질환 중 최고단계”라는 조현병 진단 이전의 인식과 연관되어 자녀를 가구구성원 외에는 공개하지 않고, 자녀의 행동을 자발적으로 숨기도록 권장하는 방식으로의 모성실천 변화를 불러왔다. 자녀의 발병 이후 어머니는 전문가집단의 지식을 흡수하고 그들이 포착하지 못한 점을 끊임없이 관찰하는 전문적이고 노동집약적인 어머니 노릇을 수행했다. 전문가 담론뿐 아니라 당사자 및 가족과의 교류와 개인적 경험을 통해 ‘어머니 지식’이 완성되었으며, 어머니는 조현병의 주원인으로써 과도한 능력주의와 경쟁주의, 혹은 양육태도와 분리된 유전적 원인을 소환할 때 어머니라는 역할부담에서 파생된 죄책감에서 거리를 둘 수 있었다. 하지만 수치심은 조현병 낙인저항에 한계를 불러일으킬 수 있었다. 이러한 어머니의 모성경험은 주관적인 계층 수준과 ‘정상 가족’ 유무와 같은 사회인구학적 영향에 따라 차이가 있었다.
Abstract
This article explores the maternal experiences of 15 mothers with children diagnosed with schizophrenia, focusing on internalized stigma and emotions through in-depth interviews. It reveals that these mothers experienced profound guilt over their child's diagnosis, leading to a reassessment of their parenting practices. Additionally, strong feelings of shame were linked to the stigma of schizophrenia, prompting them to conceal their child's condition and behavior from others. Post-diagnosis, these mothers took on an intensive caregiving role, acquiring expert knowledge and developing “maternal knowledge”through interactions with professionals, other families, and personal experiences. This knowledge helped them distance themselves from the guilt derived from the burden of motherhood when they identified excessive meritocracy and competitiveness or genetic causes divorced from nurturing attitudes as the primary causes of schizophrenia. However, the persistent sense of shame could undermine their resistance to schizophrenia-related stigma. These maternal experiences varied based on their subjective class and sociodemographic influences of a “normal family.”
