Abstract

This research investigates the stress level of teachers during inclusion. The study reports findings from 112 elementary and middle school teachers who were involved with including a child(or children) with disability in their regular classrooms. Teachers who responded to the Scale of Teacher Stress by Inclusion(STSI). Regular teachers' stress related to inclusion was moderate, teachers' professional competence and the classroom management were the most stressful for teachers. Female teachers reporetd more stress than their male counterparts to inclusion. An increase in number of years involved with a student with special needs were associated with reduction of in stress by inclusion. Stress has also been linked with control students with disabilities suggesting that the more students with disabilities, the more stressed teachers were, especially for students with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Discussion focuses on the need to identify stress during inclusion to enable more appropriate pre-service and in-service training and support to be provided.
