Abstract

This study examined the research trends and intervention effects of single-case reading interventions for students with or at risk for learning disabilities in South Korea from 2011 to 2024. The study also evaluated the interventions based on the WWC 5.0 quality indicators. A total of 16 studies were selected for analysis. General research trends were analyzed based on participant characteristics, independent and dependent variables, research designs. The studies were assessed using the WWC 5.0 indicators, and the overall effect size and effect sizes of each included studies were calculated using Tau-U. The results indicated that most studies involved elementary school students and 44% of the studies implemented two or more instructional strategies as independent variables. Among them, four studies used phonics-based instructional programs. The most frequently targeted dependent variables were word recognition and reading, vocabulary, with a total of 10 studies. In terms of research design, multiple probe baseline across participants design was the most commonly used. However, most studies did not meet WWC standards due to insufficient baseline data and a lack of interobserver reliability measurement. The overall effect size of the interventions was 0.93 indicating a high level of effectiveness. Based on the analysis results, recommendations for future research were provided.
