Abstract

The purpose of this study is to make basic data for children's art suitable for the change of the times and viewpoints by examining characteristics of students' pencil drawing. Targeting a total of 599 children and adolescents aged 8 to 13. This study conducted a pencil drawing test and analyzed it. The analysis of the students' drawings was based on the analysis standards suggested by Schwartz(1999). The results of this study were as the following: First, the characteristics of the participants' drawings varied depending on their age. The younger participants chose experience, thoughts, self, and events as themes of their drawings. Their drawings were more structured, and they drew thick lines upward strongly. In terms of contents, they drew human beings, animals, and artificial objects realistically and showed very abundant expression. On the other hand, the elder participants' themes were objects. Their drawings were less structured compared to the younger ones, and they drew lines downward and feebly. Moreover, they used more symbols and signs in their drawings, and their expression was less abundant than the younger ones. They tended to draw more metaphorically. Second, the characteristics of the students' drawings varied depending on their gender. Male participants selected thoughts and events as themes of their drawings. Their drawings were less structured, and they drew lines upward and feebly. They drew artificial objects, fire, and fabricated objects, and they lacked expression ability. Unlike the male participants, female ones selected self and objects as themes. Their drawings were more structured, and they drew lines downward and strongly. They drew more human beings, houses, nature, symbols and signs, and showed more abundant expression than male participants did.
