사회구성주의적 장애 연구의 비판적 고찰: 상대주의와 반실재론적 성격을 중심으로

초록

[목적] 본 논문은 사회구성주의의 대표적인 특징이자 논쟁점이기도 한 상대주의와 반실재론적 성격을 두 축으로 하여 장애학 내외의 사회구성주의적 장애 연구들을 검토하고 이를 비판적으로 고찰한다. [방법] 특수교육학, 심리학, 장애학 내 사회구성주의적 장애 연구 문헌 중 상대주의와 반실재론적 성격을 전형적으로 드러내는 문헌을 선별하여 면밀하게 분석하였다. [결과] 사회구성주의가 근간으로 하는 상대주의적 인식론은 절대적이고 객관적인 진리를 부정하고 다양한 관점의 존재 가능성을 강조함으로써 일견 해방적인 듯 보이지만, 이 대안적 관점들에 동등한 타당성을 부여하게 되면 이른바 ‘무엇이든 허용된다’는 비판을 피하기 어렵게 되어 결국 정치적⋅윤리적 딜레마에 봉착하게 된다. 후기구조주의적 손상 연구는 권력의 규제적 실천을 통해 손상을 지닌 주체가 어떻게 물질화⋅자연화되는지 분석하며 반실재론적 성격을 드러낸다. 후기구조주의자들은 물질성을 부정하지 않는다고 강조하지만 이에 대해 더 이상 자세히 논하지 않고, 현실을 개선하고 대안을 제시하는 대신 관찰자 및 해설가로만 머무르는 한계를 보인다. 이들은 손상에 근거하여 정체성 정치를 옹호하는 장애 운동계를 비판하며 정체성 해체를 역설하지만 그것만으로 장애문제가 해소될 수 없다. [결론] 장애인이 직면한 차별과 억압적 현실을 타개해나가기 위해서는 손상으로 인한 곤경을 고려하여야 하며, 이와 함께 사회경제적, 심리적, 문화적 장벽을 철폐하기 위한 노력이 동시에 맞물려 이루어져야 한다. 이 과정에서 주체가 되어야 하는 것은 바로 장애인 당사자이므로, 장애인의 정체성 해체는 적절한 대안이 되기 어렵다.

Abstract

[Purpose] This article aims to review and critically examine social constructionist disability studies, focusing on the characteristics of relativism and anti-realism that are the representative characteristics of social constructionism. [Method] Social constructionist disability studies with typically relativistic and anti-realistic characteristics were selected and analyzed in detail. [Result] By denying the absolute and objective Truth and emphasizing the possibility of alternative perspectives, the relativistic epistemology on which social constructionism is based appears to be liberating. However, it is hard to avoid the criticism that "anything goes", and relativism eventually faces a political and ethical dilemma. Poststructuralist disability studies analyze how subjects with impairments are materialized and naturalized through the regulatory practice of power, which reveal their anti-realistic characters. Poststructuralists emphasize that they do not deny materiality but they do not discuss this in detail, and instead of improving reality and presenting effective alternatives, they demonstrate the limitation of remaining only as observers and commentators. They criticize the disability movement that advocates identity politics on the basis of impairment and emphasize the deconstruction of identity. [Conclusion] To overcome the problem of oppression and discrimination against disabled people, predicaments due to impairment should be considered, which should be combined with the efforts to eliminate socioeconomic, psychological, and cultural barriers. Disabled people should be the subject of this whole process.
