Abstract
[Purpose] This study aims to propose design directions for educational spaces that reflect the characteristics of students with developmental disabilities by analyzing the satisfaction levels and improvement needs of special education teachers working in special schools for students with developmental disabilities. [Method] A survey was conducted with 108 special education teachers working in special schools across Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi provinces. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis of open-ended questions. The survey covered five areas: classroom interior structure, special-purpose rooms, shared spaces, safety zones, and hallways/passageways. Satisfaction and improvement needs for each area were measured using a 5-point Likert scale. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, employing descriptive statistics and Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA). [Results] Overall satisfaction with the school spaces was at a moderate level, with the lowest satisfaction reported for hallways and passageways. IPA results identified sensory regulation areas, spaces for behavioral intervention, and installation of safety handles as high-priority items, characterized by high importance but low performance. [Conclusion] Based on the practical experiences of special education teachers, this study proposes concrete directions for improving the spatial composition of special schools for students with developmental disabilities. It emphasizes the institutional need to ensure teacher participation and feedback in future spatial planning and policy development.
