Abstract
[Purpose] This study aimed to identify the current status of creating school spaces for operating the high school credit system in special schools and to analyze special education teachers' perceptions and needs regarding spatial arrangements for implementing the high school credit system in special schools. [Method] This study conducted a survey targeting teachers responsible for the high school credit system and curriculum directors at 141 special schools nationwide. [Results] Analysis revealed that many special schools find it difficult to restructure the space required for operating the high school credit system due to outdated facilities. Furthermore, only about 34% of all special schools possessed dedicated spaces for high school courses. Teachers also recognized that differentiated school space creation plans should be prepared according to the characteristics of the curriculum operated in special schools, and that field support such as legal support, budget support, and teacher training is necessary for this purpose. [Conclusion] Based on the findings of this study, we discussed strategies for creating school spaces to effectively implement the high school credit system in special schools.
