Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of college students’ negative emotional beliefs and emotional expressive affinities on their somatization and to verify the moderating effect of emotional expression ambivalence on the relationships between negative emotional beliefs and somatization. For this study, a questionnaire Beliefs about Emotions Questionnaire (BAEQ), Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire (AEQ-K) and somatization (SCL-90-R) was administered to 352 male and female students attending colleges in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and other regions. The data were analyzed through mean, standard deviation, independent samples t-test, frequency analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, stepwise multiple regression analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis, using SPSS WIN 21.0. The results of this study are as follows. First, the variables affecting the somatization of college students were found to be overwhelmingness and uncontrollableness, gender, shamefulness and irrationality, and emotional expressiveness in order. Second, the college students’ emotional expression ambivalence had a moderating effect on their negative emotional beliefs. Based on the results of this study, implications and limitations were further discussed, and suggestions for future research were offered.
