Abstract

The purpose of this study is to confirm whether the moderated mediating effect of social support and stress mindset from perceived stress affects children’s anxiety in relation to the children’s socially prescribed perfectionism and self-oriented perfectionism. To this end, self-reporting questionnaires were administered to 175 fifth- and sixth-grade elementary students residing in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Chungcheong. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, reliability verification, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient using SPSS Statistics 21.0. Mediating and moderated mediating effects were analyzed using SPSS Macro. The main findings of the study were as follows: First, concerning children’s socially prescribed perfectionism, perceived stress had a partial mediating effect on anxiety. And concerning children’s self-oriented perfectionism, perceived stress had a significant mediating effect on anxiety. Second, concerning children’s socially prescribed perfectionism, social support had a significant moderating effect on perceived stress. Third, social support did not have a significant moderating effect on children’s perceived stress from their self-oriented perfectionism. Fourth, concerning children’s perceived stress, stress mindset had a significant moderating effect on anxiety. Finally, the moderated mediating effects of social support and stress mindset through perceived stress did not significantly impact the effect of children’s self-oriented perfectionism on their anxiety, whereas social support and stress mindset through perceived stress significantly impacted the effect of children’s socially imposed perfectionism on their anxiety.
