Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of individuals with visual and multiple disabilities who have undergone animal-assisted therapy for emotional stability. Specifically, it examines the effects they experienced and the emotional stability achieved through interactions with animal-assisted therapists, therapy dogs, and participants. Since the level of understanding of the study may vary among individuals with visual and multiple disabilities, their guardians were selected as research subjects to ensure the reliability and validity of the study. A qualitative case study was conducted with three guardians of individuals with visual and multiple disabilities who had undergone long-term animal-assisted therapy for emotional stability. Data were collected through two rounds of interviews, and the collected data were verified through member checks to ensure the appropriateness of the research analysis. The research findings were analyzed within and across cases. The within-case analysis identified themes such as ‘experience of achievement motivation and enhancement of internal control’, ‘stress relief and enjoyment through peer relationship formation’, and ‘satisfaction of needs and emotional ventilation’, The cross-case analysis derived three overarching themes: ‘benefits of emotional stability’, ‘relationship experiences based on animal- assisted therapy’, and ‘the future of animal-assisted therapy from the user’s perspective’. These themes were further categorized into six concepts and eleven subcategories. Based on the findings, the study discusses the implications of animal-assisted therapy for emotional stability in individuals with visual and multiple disabilities and provides suggestions for future research directions.
