Abstract
This study investigated the effects of individualized Positive Behavior Support (PBS) combined with social stories on the problem behaviors and academic engagement behaviors of an elementary school student with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The subject was a sixth-grade female student with ASD enrolled in a special class at a general elementary school. The intervention was implemented by a special education teacher in the special classroom setting. A multiple baseline design across behaviors was used, progressing through baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases. The individualized PBS plan was developed through collaboration with the PBS team, and social story interventions targeting academic engagement behaviors were incorporated. The results showed that the combined intervention led to a decrease in problem behaviors and an increase in academic engagement behaviors. These effects were maintained after the intervention concluded. This study is significant in demonstrating how special education teachers can systematically implement evidence-based practices by integrating individualized PBS with social stories to effectively support students with ASD in school settings.
