Abstract

This study implemented an 8-session community-based mindfulness program with seven adults with developmental disabilities and analyzed their self-written gratitude notes (588 items) using Braun and Clarke's (2006) thematic analysis method to explore changes in social self-awareness and sense of belonging. Analysis of the gratitude notes revealed that participants experienced emotional stability and expanded self-awareness, developed the ability to simultaneously recognize and accept conflicting emotions, discovered self-worth within the group, and formed commonalities and connections amid differences. Expressions of gratitude expanded from material events to daily life and relationships, and mutual care and reciprocal relationship awareness developed. This study conducted a longitudinal qualitative analysis with high ecological validity through gratitude notes, confirming that community-based mindfulness is effective in strengthening the social-emotional competencies of adults with developmental disabilities, and provides practical implications for transforming individuals with developmental disabilities into active relational agents.
