Abstract
This study analyzed the effects of a mindfulness program on emotional recognition and expression abilities in adults with developmental disabilities. The participants were seven adults with intellectual disabilities enrolled in post-secondary programs at a special school in N City. The mindfulness program consisted of eight sessions focusing on sensory meditation (tea meditation, raisin meditation) and emotional awareness activities (mood meter). Reflection notes and activity sheets were collected for qualitative evaluation, and changes before and after the program were analyzed. Results showed that participants progressed from simple emotional expressions such as good or bad to more complex and nuanced expressions like fulfilled or moved. Additionally, through the program, the frequency of recognizing and expressing their emotions increased, and their ability to accept and express negative emotions improved. In the mood meter activity, participants were observed to acquire various emotional vocabularies and apply them in their daily lives. This study suggests that meditation-based mindfulness programs can positively influence the improvement of emotional recognition and expression abilities in adults with intellectual disabilities, providing basic data for the development of emotional education programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
