Abstract
This study claims that how appropriately a Christian theology explicates the revealed truth can be explained in terms of Biblical basis, empirical validity, and holistic unity. It is requested that a theology, which interprets and systematizes the evangelical truth found in the Scripture,be evaluated by the same criteria. This thesis give a close look at the theological anthropology of Pannenberg to see if it meets the requirements. Scrutinizing the features of his theological methodology, it pinpoints the Christian identity of his theology in general and his anthropology in particular, delineates how adequately his view fits human experience, and states how his anthropological contents reflects the holistic unity found in the complex nexus as a characteristic of nature’principle. Pannenberg’s image of humanity is positive. In suggesting this bright picture of human beings, he supplements to the dark, distorted view of humans espoused by the traditional church, and proposes a more balanced realistic perspective on people. His anthropology retrieves the wisdoms of the Scripture and the traditions creatively to establish its Christian identity. But he also attempts to relate them to today’s world to attain its relevancy. In order to achieve this end, he engages himself in an intensive dialogue with other disciplines and develops his anthropology starting from human experiences. He sees Imago Dei not as something completed but as human potentials, destiny, or finis. To him, Jesus is the perfect form of the Divine Image and thus is the object both of faith and imitation. Like Barth’s, Pannenberg’s theology revolves around Jesus, and therefore is Christo-centric in nature. His theological anthropology helps ministers introspect themselves and lay people have an emotionally healthy view of humanity. However, his methodology can’t be free from the suspicion that he judges the revealed truth solely by human reason and experience. He has to defend himself from the accusation that he discusses the revealed transcendent truth by this worldly means, and that he explains the whole truth in terms of partial facts.
