초록
Commentators often take David’s farewell speech in 1 Kgs 2:1-12 as describing a darker side of David and Solomon’s regime. Specifically, many understand David’s counsel to Solomon to execute Joab (vv.5-6) and Shimei (vv.8-9) in terms of power politics or personal vengeance. This paper argues that such a negative reading of 1 Kgs 2:1-12 is mostly due to Tendenz reading of the text, which stems from assuming deuteronomistic coloring within 1 Kgs 2:1-12. By comparing 1 Kgs 2:1-12 with ANE texts and discussing recent studies on 1 Kgs 2:1-12, this study suggests that Tendenz reading could be misleading. Then I will propose an interpretation not dependent upon Tendenz reading that allows for a more positive understanding of 1 Kgs 2:1-12, particularly the exercise of justice and fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant.
