초록

This study discusses Herman Bavinck’s doctrine of creation, with a particular focus on his view of the creation of human beings in the image of God. The examination of Bavinck’s doctrine of creation especially indicates three things in detail: First, God’s creation of humanity in His image is the fundamental theme in Bavinck’s doctrine of the creation of human beings. Second, in his doctrine of the creation of humanity, Bavinck is largely Augustinian because he affirms God’s creation of human beings in two substances, whereas he maintains the scholastic tradition in his view of the relation of body and soul. Third, however, in articulating the doctrine of the creation of humanity, Bavinck attempts to mediate between the Augustinian and Thomist traditions, especially on God’s formation of the relation of body and soul in human beings. From all these conclusions, two implications can be addressed regarding Bavinck’s doctrine of the creation of human beings in God’s image. First, even though Bavinck lived in an era when the orthodox doctrine of the creation of humanity was constantly threatened by modern philosophies and theologies, his teachings on the topic is by and large based upon the classic Reformed tradition of the Reformation and the Post-Reformation eras. Second, considering the fact that many still go astray in our days either to the error of Darwin’s evolutionism on the one hand and of modern secular materialism on the other, Bavinck’s view of the creation of human beings in God’s image is still relevant for modern readers. Especially, profound implications and applications of the imago Dei for the Christian and the church today can be drawn from his thought.
