Abstract

The Christian education curriculum founded and practiced by JeromeBerryman is composed of biblical stories, parables, silence, and worship. The program aims to intensify the wonders and joyful experiencesrelated to God through stimulating the curiosity and imaginative qualityof children and adolescents and thereby developing their spirituality. The distinguishing teaching method of Godly Play is ‘play andgames’, which helps find and explore the messages of God by stimulatingthe learners’ interest in biblical contents in an entertaining way. GodlyPlay prioritizes the psychological aspect of the happiness achieved bychildren when concentrating on the learning material. Furthermore, ithelps children develop a sense of sociality by encouraging them tointeract with each other in a faith community, and respecting eachother’s differences in interpretation. Godly Play does not look over the spiritual essence of the humans. For such reason, the teaching-learning process of Godly Play reflects a‘symbolic approach’. In other words, it utilizes the symbolic sources andgestures, wonders, and liturgical activities of Christianity to the fullestextent. By using symbols as a form of mediation, it connects theologicalcontents with the context of the lives of children. Such is becausesymbols not only induce knowledge, but also help find spiritual meaningsfrom evangelical messages through long-lasting nonverbal communicationAt this point where the Korean church education system is criticizedfor being taught merely on a cognitive level, the artistically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually developed Godly Play program, a form of‘holistic education’, may act as an alternative to help children recovertheir essential ‘Imago Dei’.
