Abstract
Owen succeeded John Calvin’s Reformed Theology tradition and applied the doctrine of Assurance by his English Puritan contemporaries from the view point of pastoral care. Among his collective works, eight were directed towards guiding parishioners on the details of the doctrine of assurance . The text of Psalms 130 was used chiefly to indoctrinate and equip parishioners, and he emphasized the need for parishioners to apply this to their lives. He believed that the Assurance of believers was the result of God’s eternal promise of atonement through legal justification, and bases this on the covenant of the Triune God and argues that its genesis is in the covenant of grace. Owen maintains that the believer’s assurance is possible through an intimate relationship with the Triune God. Therefore he argued that the seeds of assurance are planted through the love of God the Father, the grace of God the Son, and the counsel and holiness of the Holy Spirit, which all manifest through our relationship with the Triune God. He especially emphasized the sealing of the Holy Spirit, the pledge of salvation, and the anointing to assure believers of their salvation. Historically, Owen’s assurance doc-trine became the religious background for the Puritan Revolution and was the driving force behind their adherence to faith and martyrdom.
