Abstract
There are various things in the study of New Testament theology: Christology, Eschatology, Ecclesiology, Anthropology, and so on. Among these things, Pneumatology has been studied for a long time. This is a important subject in the field of the theology of Paul as well as of Synoptic Gospels. So, the results of the study of Pneumatology are various depending on the scholars and there are some issues which have not been solved. Particularly, there are various issues regarding to the Pneumatology of Nuke and Paul, viz., debates of ‘bapsism by the Holy Spirit’ and ‘fullness of the Holy Spirit,’ ‘spirit of prophecy’ and ‘spirit of salvation,’ and so on. Most of all, the meaning and function of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 have been still debated For example, the meaning of the Holy Spirit which de- cended in Pentecost is whether the Spirit of prophecy which gave the gift of Holy Spirit to the Christians, whether the Spirit of Salvation which con- firmed the salvation of the disciples. Furthermore, there is the debate be- tween baptism by the Holy Spirit and fullness of the Holy Spirit regarding to the Spirit in Pentecost. Among these various issues, Pneumatology of John brings up the a different topic. John suggests the understanding of the Holy Spirit in a different way from the other authors of the Bible. John uses ‘Paraclete’ for the Holy Spirit, and the translation of the ‘Paraclete’ causes problem both in the Korean Bible and the English Bible. Many pastors and preachers misunder- stand it as the name of the Holy spirit, however, it reveals the function and role of the Holy Spirit rather than its name in John and 1 John. John presents the particular function of the Holy Spirit which has not been found in the Pneumatology of Nuke and Paul, by using the terminology of ‘Paraclete.’ The sound interpretation and understanding of the terminology of ‘Paraclete’ will be helpful to understand the uniqueness of the Theology of John, as well as, it implies that the Pneumatology of John must be studied in the field of the Theology of John. Therefore, this paper aims to clarify the uniqueness of Pneumatology of John both by reinterpreting the ‘Paraclete’ which indicates the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John, and by presenting its function and role.
