본 논문은 근래 가장 큰 이슈들 가운데 하나인 지구온난화를 주제로 한다. 많은 기독교인은 지구온난화가 이산화탄소(CO2), 특히 인간이 만들어 낸 이 산화탄소로 인해 일어나는 현상으로 믿는 경향이 있다. 만일 지구온난화가 계속된다면 지구는 조만간 끔찍한 대재앙을 만날 것이고, 그래서 이러한 파 멸을 면하기 위해 인류는 대기 중의 이산화탄소를 줄이기 위한 모든 노력을 해야 한다고 믿는다. 이러한 신념과 대조적으로 소위 복음주의 우파로 불리는 미국의 한 복음주 의 그룹은 주장하기를, 인간이 만든 이산화탄소가 지구온난화에 결정적인 요인이 된다는 명제는 과학적으로 증명되지 않았다고 한다. 따라서 그들은 대기 중 이산화탄소를 감소시키기 위해 엄청난 자금을 쏟아붓는 것은 지구 온난화에 대한 비효율적이고, 비합리적, 비과학적인 대처이고, 무엇보다도 성경적 세계관과 어울리지 않아 보인다고 말한다. 대신 그들은 제삼 세계와 지구촌 곳곳의 가난한 사람들이 겪고 있는 당면한 여러 문제, 예를 들면 위생 문제나 물 부족 문제를 해결하는 데 그 돈을 사용해야 한다고 주장 한다. 복음주의 우파는 이러한 대처가 성경이 가르치는 환경적 청지기직 (environmental stewardship)에 부응하는 길이라고 믿는다. 이 논문은 지구온난화에 관해 복음주의 우파가 가진 시각과 대처, 그리고 그 배경이 되는 그들의 기독교 세계관을 소개했다. 그리고 그들의 주장이 가진 장단점들을 분석한 결과, 지구온난화에 관한 그들의 입장을 긍정적으로 평 가했다. 인류가 좀 더 합리적이고 균형 잡힌 신학에 근거하여 지구온난화 문 제에 지혜롭게 대처하는 데 이 논문이 이바지하길 바란다.
Abstract
This article focuses on global warming, which has been one of the hottest ethical issues of this era. The majority number of Christians tends to believe that Carbon Dioxide(CO2), especially manmade CO2 has been the main cause of this phenomenon. Thus, unless putting every effort in reducing CO2 in the atmosphere, humankind will inevitably have to face horrific catastrophes in the near future. However, one evangelical group in America, known as “Evangelical Right,” unlike this general understanding mentioned above, claims that this CO2 produced by humankind has not been scientifically proven to be the decisive factor in causing global warming. They further assert that spending huge amounts of money in abating CO2 in the atmosphere would rather be an inefficient, irrational, and unscientific countermeasure on the issue of global warming, and worst of all, not fit for biblical worldview. Instead, they con- tend that the money should be spent in solving the current issues that the third world nations and the poor around the world are facing such as water shortages and the improvement on living conditions. Moreover, these coun- termeasures, they believe, are biblically in compliance with environmental stewardship. This article has introduced the evangelical right’s perspective, along with their Christian worldview, and the countermeasures to global warming, ana- lyzed the strong and weak points of their assertions, found, as a result, their claims on the global warming issue positive. In conclusion, this article has shown and asserted that humankind need to more wisely respond to global warming issues with sound and balanced biblical perspectives.
