Abstract
In this paper I analyze comparatively Calvin's view and Wesley's on instantaneousness and gradualness in sanctification. Calvin consistently emphasized the gradualness of sanctification in his Institutes of Christian Religion, but often stressed the instantaneousness of sanctification in his Commentary. He used regeneration, repentance, conversion, and sanctification as the almost same meaning terms, and seldom distinguished between initial conversion and later conversion. He held that our obstinacy and sinfulness are instantly slaughtered by the sovereign work of God's Spirit. For example, he represented the sudden conversion of Saul in Acts and the immediate repentance of the Nenevites in Jonah. Calvin asserted that such instantaneous conversion can and should happen in our life, too. In distinction to Calvin, Wesley clearly defined regeneration as the beginning of sanctification. For Wesley, repentance before justification, regeneration and justification, repentance after justification, perfect sanctification, and growth after perfection are chronologically distinguished in the whole process of sanctification. Repentance and growth after perfection are gradual, but regeneration, justification, and perfect sanctification are instantaneous. With regard to the gradualness of sanctification, Calvin and Wesley are of same opinion. The difference between them is laid on the instantaneousness of sanctification. For Calvin, in some cases, sanctification is instantly accomplished by the sovereign work of God's Spirit, not by human deeds for repentance. For Wesley, perfect sanctification is instantly accomplished by faith as the Spirit's gift, which is given after persistent sanctification by such works of piety and works of mercy. Up to now Korean preservative churches have well emphasized the gradualness of sanctification, but have relatively neglected the instantaneousness of sanctification. But in the Bible Saul instantaneously changed into a whole new man after Samuel's prayer, and Jesus ordered his disciples to pray in order that the workers to reap may be sent. These imply that sanctification can be also instantaneously accomplished by God's sovereign work, not only by a long term gradual discipline. Therefore, Korean churches need to emphasize this fact of instantaneous sanctification by God's grace, and it is suggested that there is a need for prayer request on these aspects.
