종교 개혁자이며 신학자인 John Calvin은 그 신학의 견고한 논리 때문에 매우 차갑고 법정적인 사람으로 여겨지기도 한다. 그러나 Calvin의 신학이 논리적으로 분명하다는 것과 그의 신학과 적용이 비인간적이라는 판단은 전혀 별개의 문제이다. Calvin의 신학은 논리의 완결성을 가졌을 뿐만 아니라그리스도인들을 위한 위로와 확신을 주려는 목회적이고 실천적인 목적이뚜렷하다. 오늘날의 기독교 상담학적 관점에서 볼 때도 그는 신학적 이론과목회 실천 사이에서 매우 균형 잡힌 신학자였다. Calvin의 신학은 사변적인논리의 말 잔치에 머무르는 스콜라적 신학과 달리 지식의 유용성을 강조하여 그리스도인의 삶에 유익을 주려고 한다. 무정(無情)을 이상적으로 그리는 스토아 철학자들과 달리 그는 감정을 인간의 매우 중요한 본질로 파악하고 있다. 그는 성경과 신학에 해박했을 뿐만 아니라, 그 말씀을 배워야 하는 자기 시대의 인간과 사회와 문화에 대해 깊은 이해력을 가지고 있었다. 그의 균형 잡힌 신학과 인간관은 21세기의 기독교 상담자들에게 상담을 통해 궁극적으로 실현해야 할 건강한 그리스도인의 모습이 어떤 것인지 우리에게 가르쳐준다.
Abstract
John Calvin, a reformer and theologian, has been often misunderstood as a cold and vigorous thinker without humanity. However, we have to differentiate his logical completeness with his theology from his pastoral attitude toward God’s people. In fact, Calvin was an empathic minister with well-balanced attitude toward theology and pastoral practice. Although he has been widely known for his logical perfection, Calvin had a comprehensive understanding about human existence. He disliked the Scholastic vision of theology due to its unrealistic argumentation at its end. He also demonstrated a strong contempt against Stoic apathy in human understanding. Calvin practically and pastorally intended to give God’s people a strong comfort through his theology,especially through Providence and Predestination. He wanted to have them benefit from his works. Human emotions, whether positive or negative, are positive stimulations that lead us to the providence of God in control over the universe. God’s people must experience all kinds of emotions in life rather than ignore them along with God’s will. Practical and pastoral theologians today can appropriate Calvin’s pastoral insights for the believers’ pleasant and healthy life.
