Abstract

This paper attempts to explain what is the aspect in verbal system of greek and to investigate how the aspect contributes to the cohesion of text, by using the references of the Septuagint. This greek version of the Old Testament was read, commented and cited, such as the Bible, by the writers of the New Testament and the Fathers of the church. The Old Testament in Greek has played an important role in the history of church and theology. Therefore, to explore it should not be disregard. A sentence is basically composed of a subject and a predicate. The later normally determine a nature of the subject. The understanding of the predicate is important for an interpretation of the sentence, largely the text. No one can deny that, in the verbal system of Greek, understanding aspect is crucial for understanding of the Greek language. In this article, one explores two major aspects, perfective and imperfective which are recognized by most of specialist in Greek. The perfective introduces the situation as a whole which is viewed such as punctual, summary, etc, without paying attention to the internal structure of the situation, while the imperfect focus on the development itself of the situation which is seem to be linear or cursive, etc. The definition of the particular aspects may shed light on how the perfective and imperfective are in textual relation, especially in narrative text. These aspects could work together in the text given by the different features of each aspect. In other words, the perfective and imperfective have a second function in the text which is distinguished from that of a particular aspect. This function can give a coherence to the text.
