Abstract

This paper deals with the story of the Syrophoenician woman(Mk 7:24-30[31a]) also known as “one of the more hermeneutically difficult Markan narratives” including ‘one of the hard sayings of Jesus.’ The purpose of this paper is to find the meaning of Mk 7:24-30[31a] from the text itself and its socio-cultural context, under the presupposition that the Bible is ‘God’s Word’ and its historicity. With this purpose, the study will pursue a narrative-rhetorical interpretation as a unifying interpretative framework for grasping more comprehensively the meaning of the text: ‘bi-focal approach’ with literary, historical and theological dimensions. Under such a unifying methodological framework, section 1 will deal with the narrative structural analysis on the text in order to understand the flow of the story and the main point of the story. According to the structural analysis, we will understand that the dialogue between Jesus and the Syropheoenician woman, which is at the center of its structure,is the central concern of the author. Section 2 will examine the meaning of Mk 7:24-30 in the light of the flow of the story through narrative-rhetorical interpretation. The narrative-rhetorical interpretation will mainly deal with the geographical and spatial meaning as the setting of the story(Tyro and house) and the meaning of the identity of the Syrophoenician woman whom the narrator introduces, and the meaning of the referents in the dialogue between them: “first,” “the children,” “the dogs,” the “bread” and then “being filled.”Lastly, section 3 will deal with the theological-pastoral meanings of the story by 4 main themes in the Gospel of Mark: the mission and identity of Jesus, the nature of discipleship, the church as a unified table-fellowship community which is the mixed make-up of Jews and Gentiles, and the gentile mission motif.
