초록
The purpose of this paper is to reread the story of Syrophoenician woman in Mark 7:24-30, New Testament, from the perspective of narrative criticism, focusing on the context, plot, setting, character, and rhetoric. Narrative criticism is very much text-centered. It has been said to explore the what and how of a story. Each episode in Markan narrative has a particular place in the plot development. Especially the episode of Syrophoenician woman is integral to its immediate context and to the story of Mark. This story begins after Jesus' argument with pharisees and scribes, and more importantly Jesus' declaration that all foods are clean. Therefore, this episode is used as an example of that theory. The story of Syrophoenician woman has a U-shaped plot. It begins at the top of the U with a period of prosperity, which is disrupted by disaster. But at the bottom of the U a sudden change takes place by Jesus' reply, resulting in a happy ending. The setting is not neutral in that it reflects the implied writer's viewpoint, which emphasizes the kingdom of God including Jews and Gentiles. Two characters, Jesus and the woman, are dynamic and round characters. The core of this episode is the parable that Jesus used, which gives the woman the key of his final answer. The parable plays a role of an allegorical irony.
