본 논문은 유진 로우리의 설교학적 통찰력인 로우리 고리에 대하여 소개할뿐 아니라, 평가함을 위함이다. 로우리는 미국 감리교 목사이면서 설교학자이며, 그의 많은 저서들 가운데 이야기식 설교를 논한다. 그리고 이야기식설교에 대한 이론 뿐 아니라, 그에 따른 설교방법론을 설명하는데, 이것을소위 로우리 고리라 부른다. 로우리 고리는 다섯 가지의 구조로 되어 있는데 처음은 청중의 마음 가운데 모순을 불러일으킴으로 평화로움을 깨뜨린다. 그리고 그 모순에 대하여깊이 설명한 이후, 설교의 막바지에 복음을 경험케 함으로 성도들의 삶이 복음의 가르침을 따르도록 유도한다. 그러나 로우리 고리는 다시 4가지 구조로 변형, 발전한다. 왜냐하면 로우리가 자신의 설교방법론과 성경의 문학형식의 관계성을 고민하기 시작했기때문이다. 그는 자신의 로우리 고리를 이야기 구조를 가진 성경본문과 조화를 이루기 위하여 불가피하게 수정할 수밖에 없었다. 로우리 고리는 세상에 알려진지 이미 30년이 되었다. 오랜 시간 로우리 고리는 설교학계의 중요한 역할을 차지했다. 그러나 로우리의 설교학적 사상에 대하여 적지 않은 오해가 있을 뿐 아니라, 그의 설교방법론의 설교적 고민에 대하여 깊이 있게 인식하지 못한 듯하다. 그러므로 본 논문을 통하여 그의 설교학적 고민과 통찰력에 대하여 올바르게 소개할 뿐 아니라, 평가할수 있는 계기가 되길 바란다.
Abstract
This article is to introduce and evaluate Eugene L. Lowry’s homiletical insight that calls Lowry loop. Lowry is an ordained United Methodist minister, and in his books, he talks about narrative preaching and take its concrete structure(frame) in what has come to be known as Lowry loop. The first structure of Lowry loop(the homiletical plot) has five stages. The first stage is to create upsetting the equilibrium from congregation. The second stage is to dig into ambiguity... The final stage is experience the Gospel in the sermon, and congregation invites authentic response. Sometimes, the five stages are Oops, Ugh, Aha, Whee, and Yeah. However, the Lowry loop developed four stages. This is because he started to understand the relationship between the literary form of the Bible and Lowry loop’s frame. In order words, he cannot but recreate his homiletical plot because of various narrative styles in genres of the Bible. Lowry loop has come out in the homiletical field over 30years. We should introduce and evaluate his homiletical insight from Lowry loop.
