한국 침례교 교단 분열의 원인과 과정: 핵심 인물들 간의 갈등을 중심으로

한국 침례교회는 1906년 10월 6일 총회 창립 이후 단일교단으로 이어오다가 1959년부터 1968년까지 9년간 두 교단으로 분열되었다. 교단은 일제 강점기 신사참배 거부와 재림신앙을 고수하는 과정에서 순교자가 발생하고 교단이 폐쇄되었으나, 분열 없이 단일 대오를 유지해왔다. 해방 이후 미남침례회의막대한 원조로 기사회생하던 교단은 예기치 않게 분열을 하게 되었다. 분열은 1) 안대벽, 애버네티, 장일수 등 핵심 인물들 간의 갈등, 2) 경제적 이익 추구를 위한 파벌 간 투쟁, 3) 미국 선교사들의 한국 목회자에 대한 부정적 인식, 4) 주류파 목회자들의 순진하고 그릇된 판단 등 네 가지 주요 원인에 의해 일어났다. 이처럼 한국 침례교회의 분열은 교단 지도자들의 물질에 대한 욕망과 이와 연계된 파벌 간의 쟁투, 그리고 선교사들과 목회자들의 사려 깊지 않은 결정 등으로 인해 발생된 정당성이 없는 분열이었다.
Abstract
Korea Baptist Church had been a single denomination since the founding of the General Assembly on October 6, 1906 and then it got split into two denominations for 9 years from 1959 to 1968. Even the convention was dissolved by Japanese court of law due to its faith of second coming of Christ as King, and their faith of the millennial kingdom of Christ, it was not divided. The convention experienced the rapid revival through the enormous economical support of Southern Baptist Convention. By that time the convention started to divide unexpectedly. There were four main reasons. First, it was the emotional conflicts and differences in personal tendencies among the key members such as Ahn Dae Byeok, John Abernathy, and Jang Il Soo. Second, the pursuit of authority and economic profit. The massive financial support from Southern Baptist Mission became a reason for seizing the power, and the key members formed faction and struggled to gain and maintain the power. Third, there was a negative perception of American missionaries towards Korean pastors. They saw Korean pastors as people who did not adhere to Baptist belief and practices, had no will to become independent, and were frantic for financial benefits. Fourth, the mainstream pastors were naive and affectionate with their judgement. Main stream pastors accepted the claim of Ahn Dae Byeok that the missionaries were trying to rule over Koreans by money. As such, the division of Korean Baptist was a division neither a justification nor religious righteousness.
