Abstract

The Hebrew idiom דבר על לב (diber al leb) is translated “to speak tenderly” (Gen. 34:3) or “to speak kindly” (Isa. 40:2). This idiom can be literally translated as “speak to heart,” but the translators, recognizing לב as a place of emotion, added a positive adverb to על and translated it as “speak tenderly” or “speak kindly.” However, this idiom is used in various situations in the Old Testament, and when we consider those situations, we can see that this idiom cannot be interpreted simply as language of persuasion or language of affection. In particular, the use of this idiom in Genesis 34:3 allows us to understand Shechem as a loving lover who loves Jacob’s daughter Dinah and strives to win her heart. However, this interpretation does not sufficiently consider the situation of the violence committed against the woman and the attitude of the perpetrator, and completely ignores the victim's voice. In the context of Genesis 34, speaking to the victim is likely due to a selfish motive to satisfy his unsatisfied desire rather than an act of true love for the other person. From the perspective of the woman who was raped, דבר על לב is not a language of love and affection, but rather violent gaslighting to continue sexual domination. The sorrowful heart of a woman who was sexually assaulted can never be comforted by the language of the sexual assaulter.
